Title: [SOLVED] USB install appears to boot live, no install option (screenshot)
Post by: cwynd on March 21, 2017, 04:47:36 pm
Hi All,

I'm trying to install from the OPNsense-17.1-OpenSSL-vga-amd64.img via USB stick. Everything is fine until the OPNsense first menu, which does not correspond to the instructions: https://opnsense.org/users/get-started/ (https://opnsense.org/users/get-started/) Step 3

I am seeing this, I see no 'Configure Console', 'Quick/Easy Install' etc:

If I let the default boot continue, I think a live image boots (I hear the little tune) but the console shows 'Booting' (white on blue) followed by 'EFI framebuffer information' and then nothing more. I get the same result on an HDMI output as on the vga panel in the image above.

This same hardware will boot a SystemRescue USB with no issues.

I've used the other *Sense for about 10 years, so I do know a little about what to expect.

What am I missing?

That's the boot loader, not the running system. Can you show a picture of a completed boot?

Thanks,
Franco

Press escape at the boot menu, then do:
set kern.vty="vt"
boot

This should make the console work, once you get OPNsense installed, you will want to enable the "Use the virtual terminal driver (vt)" console driver option in System > Settings > Administration

Thank you! This got me a display where I could see what's going on - it is indeed booting the live image, and now I can see the installer timeout messages (which were not visible before), so I am off & running now I believe.

Thanks again :)

Per my other reply just posted, I now have a display where I can see the boot sequence ok, so I think I am all set. The completed boot screen now shows the expected live boot running menu - but with the early installer option along the way, which I will invoke next :)
Thanks for help!

cwynd,

Can you do me a huge favour and try if this image works out of the box?

https://pkg.opnsense.org/snapshots/OPNsense-201703120533-OpenSSL-vga-amd64.img.bz2

You don't need to install, just boot and see if it comes up without the kern.vty trick. :)

Thanks,
Franco

Yep it boots 'as is', no problems.

btw, this is the hardware I'm working on: http://mitxpc.com/proddetail.php?prod=JBC200F9N-2930-B with the 4-port daughter board.

Thanks, very cool 8)

The gist of this image is we are refreshing the 17.1 images on top of these boot fixes. 17.1 wasn't fully ready to follow FreeBSD, and unfortunately the old setting changed behaviour. But this is promising. Thanks again!

Cheers,
Franco
