Title: Upgrade successful: Supermicro X11SBA-LN4F
Post by: bringha on February 25, 2017, 12:49:04 pm
Hello all,

after observing the discussion a while I made today my upgrade from 16.7.14_2 to 17.1.2

Worked absolutely seamless, three reboots, overall upgrade time <6 minutes

Hardware: Supermicro X11SBA-LN4F
                Intel NX 3700 FPGA CPU
                4G RAM
20G SATA 3G SSD Super Dome
                4 Gb NICS Intel Pro

There is one very irritating thing:console

My old installation uses UEFI. At the last reboot, the last output on the console is:

Code: [Select]
FreeeBSD/and64 EFI loader, revision 1.1
(root@sennsey64, Mon, Feb20, 13:09:03 CET 2017)
Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf
|

Which means that there is no boot prompt coming up where I could put the suggested changes in console configuration as boot parameter.

Fortunately, the system comes up in the background normally and I could make the console setting changes via GUI. However, I would suggest to enable VGA console by default also for UEFI systems.

Furthermore, the upgrade installation also overwrites some config files, e.g. /etc/ttys which means in my case that if something goes wrong, there is no login prompt at the console (which I activate temporarily when doing installation work).

Aside from that - great work! Thanks to the OPNsense team!!

Hi bringha,

We changed nothing with the console settings as a choice, but the behaviour shifted from FreeBSD 10.3 to 11.0 and the old settings are not the old settings anymore. Especially UEFI console boot stopped working as it was possibly switched over from SC to VC.

Your settings under System: Settings: Administration should likely be:

Primary: EFI
VT driver: checked

We will switch to VT by default with renewed images for 17.1 if testing goes fine, which should avoid this in the future. Old systems, however, will always need to be adjusted manually. There is no "one size fits all" setting here as far as feedback has shown.

/etc/ttys is rewritten on boot to prevent corruption according to the current config settings, or if this fails reverts to a standard FreeBSD setup.

Cheers,
Franco

Hello,

I still have problems to get the messages from the KERNEL during boot - only the boot menu and the messages of the initial boot phases are shown

Primary console is EFI...

any idea?

Looking forward to your reply

Where are you copying this kernel output from, a serial console maybe?

Hi Franco,

Its logically the EFI console.

this was copied from a 'virtual' VGA console as being provided by the IPMI BMC controller of a super micro board. Its exactly a copy from the physical screen as being connected to the physical console (made my life easier when copying it ...)  8)

I am also having this issue! I also have a supermicro board. I get the same exact output as bringha on my monitor+keyboard directly connected to the opnsense box. The only difference is that I never get a login prompt! Bringha, did you change any bios settings to get the login prompt?

Hi abel408

Saw that issue is already solved as described in your thread answer in 16.7?!

Thanks for the response. Yes, I was able to fix this. Strange that the upgrade to 17.1 switched my console to serial...
