Title: How to make the usb stick boot
Post by: screege on February 10, 2017, 03:23:53 am
Hi I tried the opnsense vmware image and it worked flawlessly, now I am trying to put in in a baremetal cpu but cannot simply make the usb boot, I have tried to boot in different computers, different usb sticks and none of the images work, I have downloaded the .iso the .img 32 and 64 bit, used win32disk imager, physdiskwrite, isotousb, roadkillsdiskimage rufus tells it cannot recognize the image or is not a bootable image, I have downloaded the files from other mirrors as well, and even copied the whole extracted iso and img to the usb stick and cannot make it boot, is there anything I am missing? All of the cpus I have tried and usb sticks can boot other programs like xpenology, linux distros without any problem

Can anyone please help?

For an USB stick you need the vga image and use e.g. dd on Linux or the Gnome Disks utility.

Yes I tried everything, linux, mac,pc,  rufus, win32diskimager, roadkills, iso to usb, tried the vga, cdrom, 32 and 64 bit versions and nothing makes it boot, it just copies the files, also I tried with several usb sticks, several brands and on different hardware, I am now using pfsense but wish to try opnsense.

Finally I got it to work now the boot stays in:

masks 0x00ff0000, 0x0000ff00, 0x000000ff, 0xff000000

I have tried to boot in 3 different pcs with different architectures

Can anyone help?
