Post by: Julien on February 07, 2017, 05:28:11 pm
Hi Guys,
Today we have ordered a new hardware for the OPNSENSE.
the hardware is X64 as X86 compatible,
using X64 bit would have some advanatage to use than the X86 bit ?

Apart from the obvious difference in memory size support, there was a thread about PIE https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=3101.msg13198 stating a 5-12% performance penalty for i386.

There is no reason to use i386 if amd64 works. Small exceptions are older CPUs who cannot do SSSE3 Instructions, which fails hard with Suricata IPS due to an Intel acceleration package (Hyperscan).

The performance penalty was assumed. We never got feedback that anything slowed down noticeably for i386 users since the transition. Safe to assume its negligible. :)

Cheers,
