Title: Website(s) Improvement Suggestion
Post by: stormy on January 22, 2017, 09:06:13 pm
Hi there,

I'm new, and trying to navigate the website it APPEARS right now that there are 3 or maybe more seemingly different websites, as follows:

1) Main website: opnsense.org
2) Forum: forum.opnsense.org
3) docs: docs.opnsense.org

it appears that there is no way to CLICK from one to another and back to the other(s)..

I think it helps a lot if from forum, u can click the main, docs, or even just main, then from docs can go to main, and not just trapped in docs forever..

Not suggesting a redesign, just an icon that links to main, or docs, or forum from each one, can even be the opnsense logo itself..

You can click on the Deciso/Applianceshop advert at the top of the forum pages, and from their website to the OPNsense homepage from which you can browse back from the forum or the documentation site. Similarly, from the documentation homepage you can click the Deciso logo and through the products link click through to the community site.

Joking aside; common to most FOSS companies, OPNsense is offered on a commercial basis and for free as a community supported product. Both serve distinct audiences and are legitimately separated, no better or worse than that between something like CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

G'morning :)

It is indeed offered on a commercial base, but in that case, most OSS projects/products distinct that via .com vs .org. Also I don't see the opnsense.org website as a commercial website per se, but a project website. And as this links to either the wiki or the forums, it would be helpful, if there were a link back to the project site - if only to help get to the downloads faster ;)

If I may, I'd recommend an approach similar to what many project or company websites do and bring some sort of CI into play. Forums and Project site already share a similar menu bar on top. If implemented in the wiki as well (maybe fade it out when scrolling down), you could easily place links to the three subsites there and have better usability :)

right, even if commercial, still can have a very simple top set of icons to navigate the 'ecosystem' more usable and more visible, right now, each is an Island.. took me few days to figure there are docs :) :)

I like the idea of sowing together the docs, forum and homepage via header links.  I'll advocate this internally. Hopefully somebody still owes me a favour. Fingers crossed. ;)

Cheers,
