Title: USB instalation not working (solved)
Post by: cake on September 01, 2016, 04:17:17 am
I have downloaded 16.7 nano img.bz2 both the 32bit and 64bit. Followed instructions dd ... bs=16k... I have tested out on 3 machines. Tried 3 different USB sticks and a also different usb port when running sudo dd if=OPNsense-16.7-OpenSSL-nano-amd64.img of=/dev/sdd bs=16k

I did get the esacpe key to work once, and tried the suggestion -->set kern.cam.boot_delay="10000"   -->boot
Did not work either.
Can somebody else confirm this? I also downloaded 16.1 (bzip2 -dk ***.img.bz2)

Why is this so difficult to install? Is opnsense meant for VM environments?

Solved- Like a idiot I should not have been using the nano one, tried the serial image and what do you know. doh!

Hi cake,

I'm not entirely sure what problem you encountered. OPNsense works on a wide variety of systems, including embedded, servers, desktops and VMs. Depending on the nature of the system, the matching image needs to be found.

Just for the record, on which device did you install it?

We all have these moments so don't worry and I hope you find OPNsense useful.  :)

Cheers,
Franco

Hi Franco,
My machine is the Chinese Qotom type (j1900) with the 4 Intel nics, and SSD.

Everything is working great now. I ended up using OPNsense-16.7-OpenSSL-vga-amd64.img.bz2, and putting that a newer uefi usb thumb drive.
I am really happy at how this whole thing works. (I'm a newb, always used consumer grade routers in past)

I posted a tutorial on patching openvpn with the XOR patch on another forum. What a piece of cake. ;D

Hi there,

Ah, yes, makes sense why you ran into a bit of trouble earlier. The rule of thumb is: if it has a VGA port, it likely needs the VGA image. We will be more strict about this in OPNsense 17.1, the serial not attempting to dual-boot, which caused the installer not to appear for VGA users.

Glad you are enjoying the XOR patch! We don't advertise it much and have no direct GUI switches other than the "advanced" options window. A tutorial on how to set it up would be very cool to have in this forum, too.

Cheers,
Franco
