Title: Hardware needs for free internet sharing
Post by: xaotikos on July 13, 2016, 06:48:23 am
Hi everyone,
My brother has a cafe at a plaza and i have build the wireless network in order to provide free access to people there. The last 4 years i was using monowall with basic captive portal (just a photo with logo, no authentication) on an Alix2d2. System was initially set up, minimum to no maintenance from my side, it was just working. Now the board is killed and i want to build another one with opnsense
My needs are:
-traffic shapping for max lets say 200 clients
-basic captive portal with splash page,no authentication
-transparent proxy, with web filtering
-wan is a dsl 24mbps up/1024kbps down, in reality ~9mbps down/700kbps up
-4 wireless APs connected to a switch
-opnsense will sit between modem and switch

Can you propose any vfm board/small system i could use? I would prefer a small factor board/box and not to build a pc (power consumption and component failure avoidance).

Thanks and nice to find you (again after monowall :) )

Opensense would probably Run on another 2D2, but they do also make newer boards based around the AMD APU's for the amount of traffic you are talking you should be able to run OpnSense on there without them breaking a sweat.

I've not tried them but I saw fit-pc do also a AMD based box with a load of NIC's, that might actually be slightly easier than the Alix as it has Video out where as the Alix only has serial as far as I know.
