Title: Inexpensive hardware options
Post by: random1104 on March 19, 2023, 11:31:38 pm
Hello!, I'm looking for inexpensive options to deploy some kind of intelligence in some branch offices.

It would do basic forwarding and firewall filtering, plus zerotier or tailscale/headscale to two main sites.

I've seen some interesting options (new hardware) from Qotom & Deciso, but being into tight budget I wonder if machines like Lanner NCA-1010B-ST1 could still get the job done without melting down (hardware needs to be reliable)

when it comes to company installations i would recommend pricier products, it will save you headache in the long run

with that said, sure get som qotom/protectli/hp 730 etc etc and keep a few extras on the shelf if you wanna go that way

but i´d say go with deciso and that type of product

/y

Thanks for the feedback, and what about the Lanner NCA-1010B-ST1?, Lanner is known for their rugged appliances, although that machine is kind of dated.

If you want the option of business support and a warranty on the hardware, you should consider the smaller Deciso appliances. I imagine they'll go with a similar price to that older machine but could perform better.
You can get cheaper alternatives yes but business normally require some sort of support. In the case of your own build, you are all the support from software to hardware. You become the system integrator. But I'm sure you know that already.
So yes a lot of people use many different appliances to build OPN on. Only buying the Deciso appliances contribute to the development. If the business is paying for it, everyone wins IMHO.

I'm actually planning on something like this:

- Second hand rugged hardware + spares for the branch offices (~100) + OPNSense Business subscription. They can be had for around us$ 120.
- Deciso pair of rackmount appliances for main site + Business subscription
- Virtual appliance + Business subscription to cover IaaS workloads integration.
- Additional Virtual appliances + Business subscription for centralized management.

Main site + IaaS should not fail. Branch offices can be quickly brought back with spares.

Otherwise, budget won't cover the implementation.

Very sensible. Why don't you reach out to Deciso dierctly as a pre-sales enquiry?
But if you go with ~100 devices for branches then I see the requirement to look at options for low unit price.
But then the main reason to contact Deciso for sizing advice for your per-branch requirements.
