Title: Activate Hyper-Threading (or not)?
Post by: phoenix on June 02, 2016, 03:06:14 pm
I've recently installed OPNsense on a new piece of kit that has a dual core i7-4560u processor and hyper-threading. I've read various posts/threads/blogs on the internet (mostly older ones) that advise against using hyper-threading but they've been mostly in relation to running freeBSD in a VM, there have also been some comments that it doesn't make any difference whether it's activated or not - what's the current thoughts on this? FWIW, I do have it activated and there seems to be no problems that I can see, the system is lightly loaded and download/upload speeds seem good. I do have a m inor niggle with the onboard NICs but that's for another thread. :)

That information is indeed very old.
As far as I know the old information is no longer valid.

As an example: with Hyper-V 2008 you didn't want HT enabled. With 2008 R2 it was fixed, and I never experienced any problems in the 3 or 4 years that ran it.
Of course, FreeBSD being FreeBSD and not exactly fast when it comes to current hardware, this might differ.
But I really doubt it would still be an issue.

Thanks for your reply. Some of the information was only about 18 months old, hence my question here. I do have hyper-threading enabled on this hardware and I did when I was using pfsense and more recently OPNsense in a VM and didn't see any problems with either of those. In the short time I've been running this new hardware there's nothing untoward happening but I do like some confirmation once in a while. :)

Thanks again.
