Title: OPNSense alternative to mikrotik routeros
Post by: captainfreeky on May 26, 2016, 09:52:46 pm
I am trying to find alternative to Mikrotik Routeros Due to it instability and wanted something open source so found this
1) Can it be alternative to Mikrotik router os ?
If above is yes then
2) What is the min  hardware will it require for pppoe server for min 2000 clients if only used as pppoe server  ?
3) Function matches or have some additional or less  Feature which mikrotik routeros  dont have ?
4) How stable is it with load as when load comes on MRos it starts acting funny so where opnsense stands ?
5) Is it router with firewall

Pretty huge delay here, whoops.

1) A conditional yes, depending on your following questions/answers.

2) Scaling may be a problem. If not scaling, then the GUI will get in the way. PPPoE is capable, but the GUI parts are ancient and do not even plug into the newer authentication systems. In general, clients are not he problem, throughput for the clients may be.

3) This is too broad a question for me, I'm sorry.

4) If the hardware is dimensioned appropriately, there shall be no stability issue.

5) It's much more.  Too broad again.

That being said, Mikrotik is reliable and awesome. You won't find PPPoE server support to be up to your desirable level, mostly because it's always been a fringe feature for *sense, especially for ISP-like environments like your client counts.

We could make OPNsense awesome in that regard too, but not without help and a reasonable time frame.

Cheers,
Franco

Maybe look at a UBNT edgerouter if you can get one big enough to do what you need .

I was using a smaller one at home until recently, great bits of kit only not using it the moment as I Built a box to run Sophos XG, decided I didn't like that much and am running Opnsense at the moment.

Still not quite ready with the final config and as to if it will/will not be Opnsense but there's a good chance it will as other than not managing to get inline IPS behave itself it seems to be the best option I've found thus far in terms of GUI layout and features I want.

Also one of the reason I Built my own firewall was to get the DSL modems built in and reduce the number of boxes under my TV, sadly draytek have pushed back the VigorNIC release date so atm I still have 5+ boxes  :(

(2x DSL modems , Firewall, Wi-fi AP, Switch, lightwaveRF device.)
