Title: [SOLVED] High CPU usage.
Post by: Martinezio on April 13, 2016, 12:03:13 pm
Hi.

We have noticed, that couple of days after upgrading OpnSense to current production version, CPU starts to be eating by something in user space. Process monitor says, that mostly is is consumed by php-cgi, but CPU usage on those procesess is no more than 3% (there is about 5 of them). But top command says, that CPU is used in 100%, with over 60% taken by user, about 1% for interrupt and the rest for system. Usage in user space is varying between 60-80%.

My installation is working on vmware hypervisor (ESXi 5.5) with 1 vCPUs (Xeon X3430 @2.4GHz). Currently running OpnSense 16.1.7.

What can be do to solve this issue? Thx in advance for any info and hint.

Hi there,

Are you sure the ESXi is not under heavy load from other VMs during the time of the observartion?

Do you use the IDS/IPS or Proxy server?

Which version were you coming from prior to 16.1.7? Latest OPNsense version is 16.1.9 with 16.1.10 coming out tomorrow.

Cheers,
Franco

Yes, I'm sure ESXi is not overloaded - it serves only two virtual machines - one is this router and second is a Linux for VPN.
Prior version was 15.7 series (but I don't know exactly which build).

My IDS/IPS configuration doesn't change between 15.7 and 16.1 :/ And there is huge difference in CPU usage. I will perform a small change right now: I will add 1 core to the vCPU for this VM and restart the router. Then I will check, if there is any difference and report this to You in this topic.

Cheers!

Adding second core and reboot as for now make the situation better. Will see, what happens, when states table grows up a little. Now is 3% and CPU is varying around 10-20%.
Further reports will follow after next business hours ;)

Ok, looks that the problem is solved :) CPU is cold as for now and I think it should stay in this state.

Best regards!
