Title: Pretectli FW6E up to the task?
Post by: galt007 on January 25, 2022, 01:38:58 pm
Hi FOlks

gige fiber showing up soon so have to upgrade my router. I want to run a firewall, route (4 vlans), wireguard and eventually add IDS and IPS.

can the protectli fw6e with 64G Ram and 256 SSD handle this workload?

for a little more $ I can build an ITX based system with an I350-T4 and a 11th generation series 7 8 core cpu versus the 4 core 7th generation protectli.

clearly the form factor of the protectli is attractive.

Many thanks in Advance.

How many users behind the device? You wont need so much RAM as opnsense doesnt use that much.

Just for home allebone

I've since found a HP small form factor workstation on ebay for $250

E3-1230V5, 16GB ram, and I have a spare SDD. so it seems like this would work well if i add a I350-t4 v2 NIC

Not sure but if this is just for home then out of those protectli boxes you referenced the FW6C looks more than enough. You wont need more than 16gb ram. Its more expensive though than what you found on ebay but has no fan so would be super quiet at home.

Thanks Allebone

I decided to buy the used equipment. The form factor of the Protectlis is very attractive i may buy one in the future.
