Title: Use of the OPNsense logo
Post by: phoenix on March 24, 2016, 07:45:46 pm
I don't know if this has been mentioned in any documentation (I couldn't find anything) but I was wondering what the restrictions are on the use of the logo. I was thinking of adding it to a signature on a forum that I frequent and obviously that would include any required copyright notice, is this possible?

Hi Bill,

It's been on the website since we started with 15.1 under "trademark policy": https://opnsense.org/about/legal-notices/

I will ask Jos to say a few words here, he can explain this best.

Cheers,
Franco

Using the logo...

We have setup some simple guidelines that are outlined on the opnsense website.
In essence it means that anyone may use the OPNsense logo to promote the project as long as its not lead people to believe that you represent the OPNsense project.  Also the logo must link back to the project page if possible.

The trademark is to protect the community and we welcome anyone to spread the word and help to grow the project (that includes using the logo for promotion purposes).

For other use cases or when in doubt, just ask us at project AT opnsense DOT org

Thanks Jos

After reading the page that Franco pointed me to, your comments just confirm what I understood from the 'legalese'. :)

Hi jschellevis,

The trademark is to protect the community and we welcome anyone to spread the word and help to grow the project (that includes using the logo for promotion purposes).

Do you have any future plans for creating a non-profit foundation for OPNsense, which holds the trademark "OPNsense", the copyright on the code, the internet domains, etc. so that OPNsense will be fully released to freedom and independent of Deciso, i.e. to go the way that many sucessful Free Software projects go nowadays, such as Libreoffice (> The Document Foundation), Tryton (> Tryton Foundation), Django (Django Software Foundation), etc.?

Cheers
