Title: Src Hostname resolving
Post by: kosta on May 09, 2021, 08:20:36 pm
Hello,
shouldn't Sensei actually display full hostname instead of IP Address if it's in Unbound? I have tried both static entry override and as well as static DHCP entry and checkbox Register static DHCP mappings.
I checked the nslookup, it's looking fine, I can resolve both ways, and it displays hostname.domain.com.
Also both OPNsense and DHCP range have domain.com set. So, all seems in order.
However, when doing DNS - > Live view in Sensei, I see only the IP of that specific computer. Shouldn't it say hostname.domain.com?

I am sorry, I apparently missed the setting in the configuration. Now it's working.

I have to yet again revise... it's working only for some clients. I see some phones and a laptop, but I don't see my own computer.

Any ideas what might cause this?

Hi,

You can define your computer as Alias (Firewall - Aliases). Sensei recognizes the OPNsense aliases.

Thank you, that is indeed true, however I turned that feature off, as I want hostnames.
And I don't want additional entries in Unbound.
It must be clean and working, and it's not.
I really have no idea why this one specific computer isn't working though!

Hi @kosta,

Do you have "Perform real-time DNS reverse queries for local IP addresses" enabled? If so, when you do a manual reverse query for this particular device, do you receive an answer?

Hello,
well of course it's on, since I want to do a reverse lookup! Otherwise it wouldn't make sense.
And yes, reverse lookup in windows is working, I get the FQDN back.

Shoot me dead...
I just checked and it's working now.
I swear I didn't change a thing since yesterday!

We have a saying in Turkish which goes like "Doktoru goren hasta, birden iyilesir".
English translation is like "Patient who sees the doctor with the syringe, recovers immediately" ;)
Firewall must have sensed somehow :)
