Title: loosing lots of my band width when connected through opnsense
Post by: Black_demon69 on April 30, 2021, 02:28:53 am
my connection is running approx 950 Mbps up and down when connected directly.  my connection is Wireless to the house with a pair of MikroTik 60ghz dishes bridged point to point backed by 5Gbps Fiber connection. I have a public IP also.  Machine specs: CPU     Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU N3450 @ 1.10GHz (4 cores), 6 GB ram, 128GB ssd, 2 1gb NIC, OPNsense 21.1.5.

when connected through opnsense speeds drop to around 600Mbps dn and 150Mbps up.  how should I fix this?  any help would be welcome.   thank you all in advance.

Have you made any changes to the default install, I.E. tuning?  What HW do you have, E.G. Intel multi-port NICs?  You need to supply much more information then what you have.  Are you matching your MTU for all your links?  What services if any have you enabled on the FW?

Also, F.Y.I. keep in mind when adding ANY additional components to a network, that will add latency.  This is not to say your issue is the computer you have placed inline, but you will most likely not see the same exact speed.

this is all I know about the machine
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XBKFZVL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

nics are onboard

as for changes made don't remember all changes because it was done in spare time and over a week..   just remember turning stuff off.   speeds were initially around 270Mbps before messing with it now up around 600Mbps. I do know that there will be some kind of hit when you put something like this in place.   one other thing is weather I run direct or with opnsense the ping is around 4 to 10 ms.   the main system connected is a ryzen 9 3900 12 core cpu with 32 GB ram and 2 1tb m2 ssd in raid 0   with rtx 2060 graphics card x570 chipset on MB that is Pcie 4 ready.

I know that the machine I have running this is cheap and might be the cause or partial cause of the problem.   I think A reinstall of opnsense is in order so I can track changes made.

I would love to have some suggestions if you feel inclined to give them :D and I thank you for the response

Cheap hardware = cheap NICs. Let me guess, Realtek? If so, search the forum for "Realtek" and have fun.

Cheers

I would look at the hardware sizing and setup in the guide.  Also you may want to look at Intel NIC as they have been to be less problematic from what I have see, (I'm not simply using the basic functions).  Also make sure you get something that has enough capabilities to handle features you may be using (even a remote possibility).

Using older /  used equipment may actually be better for you since Freebsd does not really support the latest technology.
