Title: Monitor gateway returning nothing
Post by: g0nz0uk on March 29, 2021, 12:43:30 pm
Hello,

On my Lobby I like to show the Gateway health, I did this in pfSense (moved over this weekend).

Here you can see I can ping my gateway via the CLI, but the GUI doesn't like it:

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

You have monitoring disabled. Enable it and specify a monitor IP address (eg the gateway or some more remote address, such as 8.8.8.8 )

Edit: as your gateway responds to pings you can leave the monitor IP address out - unless you want to monitor not just that the gateway is up but that it has internet connectivity, in which case specify a more remote public IP - but you still need to enable monitoring (uncheck the disable box)

I'm blind, I didn't see that "disable" option.

What is strange it I can ping my WAN gateway, but it will show as offline.  I've add 1.1.1.1 instead and that worked.

Thanks.

"I'm blind, I didn't see that "disable" option."

Quite unfortunate wording, if you dont know already what you are looking for, unlikely you will spot it on the 1st look.

Also its even more misleading that even if its effectively disabled, the dashboard says with green smily face that this gateway is "online". When not a single probe has been sent to that gw ever. I asked for that green color to be replaced with something that is not the universal color of okay (like some light blue, that shows there is no real problem but also not fully okayish), but that was downplayed.

Wondering how many of the total opnsense userbase thinks without even stopping for a second, that their gw monitoring is turned ON by default, just vecause they see the green color on the dashboard. When in fact it is completely disabled in every default install. Unless of course you dig into the settings, and enable it for yourself. Its not the big difficulty to enable it is worrysome, but the misleading signs. Wonder if the same interface feedback colors would be implemented in nuclear power plants as well...

Everyone whos new to OPNsense should read the Docs.
There it says: "Disable Gateway Monitoring -- Disable monitoring (consider online)"
So should be clear

I never have GW Monitoring enabled if I just have one Internet Line - for what? I see when my Internet isn't working.

And if you enable it you can see the stats on your Dashboard, these are missing if its disabled.

Anybody who has seen the Dashboard -> Gateway widget, assumed monitoring is ON, as the text said ONLINE, and the color was green!
My ISP provides PPPoE, and my default gateway is unpingable, so the missing stats were accounted to that environment.
If the "Disable gateway monitoring" would produce a gray or any other color apart from green, nobody would ever misinterpret the Disabled/Enabled gw monitoring.
But I dont have to convince you that the current one is a bad practice. Unless you are sitting in the decision making chair inside Deciso. Are you member of the staff? I dont see that in your profile.
