Title: Can not install 21.1 from USB Stick
Post by: thirdlife on March 24, 2021, 09:43:20 am
Hi everyone,

i have requisitioned myself an "HP ProDesk 400 G6 MT, Core i5-9500, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD" and plugged a Intel two-port NIC into it for testing purposes.

I can not install OPNsense onto this machine, it is always stuck at the "Booting" Screen. Image was prepped on a USB Drive via Rufus "OPNsense-21.1-OpenSSL-vga-amd64.img".

Could anyone give me a hint on what i am doing wrong ? Pic is attached.

Best Regards,
Ben

Have you tried using a different USB stick? I remember I had some issues with a particular USB and it just would get stuck during installation at 38%.

Once I created a different install USB, it worked. You can also try creating the USB with a different program. I was using Linux, so I just dd'ed the img file onto the USB.

I'll try it although i don't think it will help. Had the same problem with PFsense (also BSD based). I feel like there is an issue with the bootloader and the HP Mainboard.

Installed two different other OSes already from that stick.

I sometimes had trouble with USB3-ports and booting. Try a USB2 port and/or a USB2 stick. Maybe boot in legacy mode?

Yes, you should even try creating the install USB when connected to USB2. IIRC, I had trouble with my USB only because I created it when connected to USB3.

Tried two different sticks now. One USB3, one USB2. Both setupped via USB3 and USB2. No change, same as in the first post. Keeps hanging at "Booting". Don't know what else i could do. Already enabled Legacy Boot as well as UEFI (no CSM Option in BIOS to deactivate).

All HP "security features" have been disabled each step by step but no luck so far.

Linux or FreeBSD no problem?

I have seen something similar last weekend...
for some fun testing I wanted to install OPNsense 21.1 on a ASRock N3150DC-ITX with dual port intel NIC attached... same picture as thread starter - stuck at booting, but if you wait long enough it will beep at some point (what it usually does when it finished booting), but since there was no other output on the screen I cancelled this one...
during that fun test I also tried at least two different USB drives and also burned a ISO to DVD, switched between USB 2 and USB 3; resetted BIOS settings; ...no success... :(
maybe I should have tried to attach a network cable and see if another device gets an IP address after the "finished booting" beeps...

This may, or may not help, but there was previous a FreeBSD bug similar to this.  I don't know if it is fixed of not.

I tried both variants:

set kern.vty="sc"
set kern.vty=sc

tried each on separate boot attempts, then typing boot. Still stuck at the same screen as in my first post.
Boot menu is loading, i press space, then option 3 or ESC to get into the commandline and then typing one of those commands above pressing enter and then boot and enter.

No worky.

Linux or FreeBSD booting/installing? (Maybe have a look at Nomad, a BSD USB-stick live system)

Not sure what you mean with this?

Its a blank machine, and i just downloaded the Image described in the first posting which i then put on a USB Stick to install OPNsense from it. Which is BSD based so...BSD ?

Simply download FreeBSD (e.g. Nomad) or Linux and look if it boots/installs. If not: The problem is on the hardware side. If yes: OPNsense might have a problem with the installer...

did another fun-test today - after the "finished booting" beeps I attached a network cable and was able to connect to 192.168.1.1 via SSH - logged in as installer and was able to install OPNsense on that box.
After booting from SSD the console worked as usual...
