Title: [SOLVED] WAN setting incorrect DHCP address?
Post by: AceBlade258 on February 07, 2016, 08:39:19 pm
My WAN adapter is setting itself to an odd address via DHCP. I sort-of have internet access, but it's really slow and latent. I can browse to speedtest.net, and run the test (eventually), but the speed is a tenth what it should be and the upload is zero.  Oddly, ping times to things like google and 8.8.8.8 are not reporting abnormal, but they take forever. (eg, it says "Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=53" but there is a good two to three seconds between each one.)

I have OPNsense running as a VM with two virtIO adapters, if that matters. Hardware Checksum Offloading is disabled. I am currently using pFsense in the exact same setup with no issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know what you need from me and I will do my best to provide it.

Thanks!

Hi AceBlade258,

According to the documentation https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/virtuals.html#general-tips you need to disable also TSO and LRO.

By the way which Virtualization System are you using ?

Thanks for the link; I didn't think to disable the HW offloading for TSO and LRO, but it makes sense. Not surewhy that would screw up the address it's getting though...

I'll give it a shot when I get home; I don't have an oob circuit in place yet. (I mean... it is just my house...)

Thanks for the reply, by the way. I'm running libvirt/qemu-kvm on top of CentOS 7, and it has been rock solid so far.

So, after spinning up a new VM, I logged in to the web config did the setup, and checked the hardware offloading; the only one that wasn't already disabled was the checksum offloading.

Anyway, last time, it got an address that looked right, but everything still seemed really latent. I was able to get to speetest.net, and my download was what it should be, but my upload was staunchly stuck at zero. Also, there is measurably more jitter on pings when using OPNsense, but I think that might be related to whatever was preventing my upload from working.

What should I be looking for to diagnose this? (Searching hasn't yeilded anything yet.) At the moment, I've switched back to pFsense again.

Turned out to be a noisy coax line in the house.

Up and running now quite nicely.
