Title: Connection to Internet VPN provider privateinternetaccess.com
Post by: StevenE on January 28, 2016, 04:49:25 pm
Hi,

I'm trying opnsense for the first time, and having problems getting it to connect as an OpenVPN client to an Internet VPN provider, as I don't trust my local ISP not to be doing DPI. I've successfully configured it to make an openvpn tunnel to the VPN provider, privateinternetaccess.com, however I can't get it to set the routing correctly. I think I need to set this up via the "IPv4 Remote Networks" field in the openvpn client configuration page, however it doesn't seem to work. Setting this to "0.0.0.0/0" gets an error back from the route command according to the log, but no more info than that. Does anyone know what the correct entry is for here, or am I going about this in the wrong way?

Thanks

There are different ways to set things up, if you don't mind going through your normal WAN when OpenVPN goes down or restarts, then you can follow the guides which tell you to duplicate the NAT outbound rules.

If you want more flexibility and assign different gateways to specific LAN addresses and make sure traffic never leaks outside of the tunnel, you'll have to look at guides telling you to set up firewall rules for your LAN. It's tricky to set up if you also connect to machines on your LAN, use proxies, etc. You'll have to experiment a lot.

What do you mean by this? be specific.

I use PIA as well. I have no problem routing and connect. My problem is the variable speed.
