Currently running 20.1 and would like to shift to 20.7. I also use the pfatt script to bypass my AT&T RG and connect to the ONT. For this reason wanted to solicit advice from wise forum users ;)
- What's the best way to be able to test 20.7 and roll back to 20.1 without having to re-install?
- Should I repartition the disk, clone the existing install 20.1 and upgrade the clone to 20.7 to test it out? Is there a recommended 'BSD-type' way to do so?
I work from home like many others during this pandemic so a bit cautious about not disrupting what is right now a critical service - especially for the better half :D

without a second harddisk: no
second hard disk: install 20.7 there, restore your 20.1 backup, test - if it works: great, if not: install first harddisk to run 20.1 again

Or with an IPMI card and remote mount If available .. but this would also bei a new install.
If unsure, better wait. There are no known risks

Use a 20.7 image and the early importer to import your settings into the Live image. Test.... and if ok reinstall...
https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/install.html?highlight=installer#opnsense-importer
If it's not working just shut down, remove installer media and boot up old install.
Cheers,

I did multiple rollback currently. HW and virtualized too.
Just backup the config from 20.7.x reinstall a 20.1 import the config and update to the 20.1.x latest version.
I tested with openvpn client server, ipsec tunnels, etc. Everything is working fine.
I dont think its possible without reinstall.
