Title: Boot loop after the latest update
Post by: shoaibz on September 03, 2020, 04:53:08 pm
Hi all,
Noob here. Just updated my opnsense to the latest system update and it went into a boot loop. But I was able to get to the crash report screen and copied it, and at the end of the report i can see

"Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode"

I backed the config just before patching so I may be ok. Any ideas would be appreciated if I don't have to rebuild it.

I've just had what might be the same problem, a persistent boot loop after doing the upgrade. For some reason while I was trying to debug this I turned off any unnecessary services, in this case I disabled the IPS/IDS services and rebooted OPNsense then tried the upgrade again and lo and behold that seems to have solved the problem. If you have those services enabled, try disabling them and see if that fixes it, if it doesn't then I'm not skilled enough to point you in any particular direction.

Thanks phoenix, but I didn't have IDS running, in fact there was nothing more than bare bone opnsense install. Any way i did a rebuild and restored my configuration and then applied the update again. So all good now. I wonder what made the page fault error.

I have regularly seen the same fatal trap error across 3 units.  All qotoms. I have been submitting the crash log in hope it get looked at. Seems to be a recent thing as never had an issue before. Mine seem to get it upon reboot after the applying of updates
