Title: MaxMind GeoIP alternative - IPFire location
Post by: KoS on August 31, 2020, 10:17:51 pm
As the GeoIP from MaxMind needs registration the IPFire team has built their own location database, called IPFire Location. Maybe that could be of use for OPNsense too as some kind of collaborative approach?

Not sure about the internals of the IPFire location approach and if/how it could be integrated into OPNsense.

great idea  8)

MaxMind's often used GeoiIP database has been set since the beginning of the year in favor of the GeoIP2 databases.

@all
as an alternative plan B certainly a good idea.
But one question remains... who can we serve the beer to  ;)

I can recommend IPinfo's free IP to Country ASN database(https://ipinfo.io/products/free-ip-database). The database is available in CSV, JSON, and MMDB formats.

As far as I know, the IPfire's location database needs to be extracted completely after downloading the software. There is no publicly available distributable version of it.
