Title: ESXi 7.0 Paravirtual Controller OPNSense 20.1 not detecting disk
Post by: Asgaroth on July 08, 2020, 06:57:56 pm
Hi All,

I see there are several posts about vmware and opnsense configurations. I have tried to install OPNSense 20.1 on a ESXi 7 guest, but the installer does not detect any drives attached to the system.

The confioguration is fairly straight forward, guest is configured as follows:

* Paravirtual SCSI controller
* 20GB SCSI Hard Disk
* 1 x VMXNET3 NIC
* 1 x PCI-Passthru Realtek NIC
* 2 x CPU Cores
* 8GB Memory
* VMWare Guest OS version is set as "FreeBSD 12 or later versions (64-bit)"

How have you out there managed to install OPNSense with a paravirtual hard disk controller?
Do I need to change the controller to one of the other LSI type controllers for it to detect the drives?

I'm using the "dvd" image which apparently has the complete installation on it.

Any tips/tricks and/or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have a 20.1.8_1 VM running as an ESXi 7 guest with:

- LSI Logic SAS controlled SCSI disk backed by NFS datastore, and hence thin provisioned
- VM hardware v14 due to upgrading from 6.7
- ESXi, 7.0.0, 16324942 host version

I have installed from the DVD ISO back in the days, and kept it updated since.

Get rid of the paravirtualized controller. You dont need that.

Thanks all, switching to the LSI controller did the trick.

I wonder will the opnsense installer ever include the paravirtual controller driver in the future?
