Title: [SOLVED] Can boot installer & install but then can't boot newly installed system
Post by: jacobq on November 23, 2015, 06:59:36 am
I bought a Jetway HBJC311U93W-2930-B (http://www.jetwaycomputer.com/JBC311U93.html) for the purpose of making it my home router / firewall / network security gateway, and I'd like to run OPNsense on it. Unfortunately, I'm running into problems and am not sure what to do next. I was able to create a bootable USB stick using OPNsense-15.7.18-OpenSSL-vga-i386.img (MD5 be4ac0aa8e486d3199b801488fb1643c), boot to it, and complete the installer (tried both "easy" and "custom" with the same result). However, when I try to boot from the new installation the system immediately reboots (i.e. I see the POST screen about 2 seconds after selecting the mSATA device with the OPNsense installation). I suspect this might be related to a BIOS setting but don't understand why the installer image would boot fine. Would anyone here be willing to help me get some ideas for what to try next? I tried installing pfSense also and got the same result. Is there any way to get some kind of debug output from the kernel to figure out what leads to the crash/reset? Are there some common things that tend to cause this? Thanks in advance.

Actually, just writing that question got me thinking, "What if I try the 64-bit version?" and, sure enough, when I ran the amd64 installer and booted the resulting system it came up just fine, yay!

Hi Jacobq,

Yes, some boards tend to do this. It could be fixed in the BIOS, but it's a very rarely asked question these days for vendors.

Welcome to OPNsense. :)

Cheers,
