Title: [SOLVED] 15.7 nano images don't fit
Post by: BertM on August 05, 2015, 07:35:35 am
I am trying to write the OPNsense-15.7_LibreSSL-nano-i386.img to a 2Gb CompactFlash that came with a device (pfSense Small, SML20081D) that we purchased from applianceshop.eu some time ago.

It seems that the image is to large for the CF.
Using Win32 Disk Imager, it gives the error: "Not enough space on disk: Size 4001760 sectors Available: 3931200 sectors Sectorsize 512".

The issue exists both for OPNsense-15.7_LibreSSL-nano-i386.img and for OPNsense-15.7_OpenSSL-nano-i386.img

Are the images to large or is there something wrong with the CF?

Is there an easy way to shrink the size of the image?

Bert

Some vendor's cards are smaller than others, in this case it doesn't fit. We've also found that unless you have a large amount of RAM you are going to run into upgrade trouble soo as the 2GB image only has a 1GB slice active, which doesn't leave enough room for a recent firmware upgrade (about 300 MB total).

If you can, use a 4GB card. We'll provide a fresh nano image soon with a slice size of 2GB (4GB total) soon.

Thanks for the info Franco.

I guess the conclusion is:
Don't try it on an Alix board and get something with an APU board with sufficient sized SD.

I know people running OPNsense fine on ALIX on cards as small as 2GB CF cards.

One of them kindly donated a WRAP last week, that'll help with testing the low end / nano side of things. We've lowered the bar since the m0n0wall EOL announcement, but we are struggling for obvious reasons: old hardware is old.

Hi Franco,

when will that 4GB image be available, and will that replace the current nano IMG?

I'm just testing my first setup on ALIX using OPNsense-15.7_LibreSSL-nano-i386.img....

Thank you Franco, I found your update'd image in snapshot's on the mirror's.

Are you planning to offer a x64 Image for boards like the APU too?

There's a new one that's even smaller and based on 15.7.9:

https://pkg.opnsense.org/snapshots/OPNsense-15.7.9-LibreSSL-nano-i386.img.bz2

This is the last snapshot (test release). We're going to offer new nano images with said snapshot's parameters for 15.7.10 for both i386 and amd64. i386 only was a shortcut for testing/feedback, sorry for any inconvenience caused.
