Title: Want to get rid of spammers?
Post by: Supermule on July 19, 2015, 11:56:01 am
On new profiles make them use a captcha for the first 10 posts.

The captcha should be constructed like this.

10 pictures of famous places around the world. Make the random.

Make the poster answer what the picture is and VOILA!

Forum spam free :)

that would be good idea too. depending on what modules are available for the forum software.

It's gotten worse with the spamming. So far our attempts (even banning) have been barely successful. We will look into it again (although captchas are a general nuisance for humans these days). If we only knew.... :/

I've been a moderator on a busy site for the past ten years and this plugin works - most of the time. It does depend on the moderators reporting the spammer and there seems to be some persistent spammer IP addresses that do get through but overall it should be a good addition.

Thanks for adding it. :)

It showed up so much of new spamming. I had the thought, that s.b. might actually pay some "north korean" whatever persons to spam us ??? All the spamming must be done by persons spending time to do this meaningless actions manually.

Should we say so in our sign up form, that we just do the "uncomfortable" countermeasures because of  spammers?

@phoenix: thanks for all the reports over the past weeks. it has helped to drop the response time immensely.

@chol: no spam so far. the filter seems to work, so hopefully no extra (hard) captchas here any time.

So keep the fingers crossed. :)

I have been using AbyssGuard (https://www.encrypt-the-planet.com/2015/12/08/protect-your-websites-with-abyssguard/) for clients websites. It works really well for stopping spam among other threats. It requires some setup, not a simple plugin.

I'm personally glad this topic has been revived. Spam definitely needs to be addressed on this forum. I just did a test registration and the only challenge to my registration was a simple captcha that was very easy to read. I would recommend the following:

Verification questions in addition to the captcha.

Quote from the link below:

Quote
As for the questions, define 10-20 questions and ask for 3 at registration. That will shuffle them and make it so that bots don't store your Q&A easily.

I'm a bit busy lately, Fabian suggested to try this one http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/?mod=1044
(http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/?mod=1044), which is on my todo list. other / easier / simple to install measures are also fine, as soon as I find the time I will try one out.

Looks like a promising SMF mod. It appears to support only SMF forum version 2.0, 2.0.7 and 2.0.10. When you do get the chance to implement this maybe it will work with version 2.0.11.
