Title: [SOLVED] Install to Hard Drive Directly.
Post by: DoyleChris on December 12, 2018, 03:28:18 am
I have a computer I would like to install OPNSense on.  But i cant get it to boot off of USB stick and when i try to boot off a CD it fails part way though.

I was wondering if i pull the hard drive out, and be able to install the image directly to the drive from my computer.

Hi Chris,

You can use the dd utility to write the nano image directly to any disk. It'll auto-expand on the first boot to use all available space.

Install from a different PC and moving the hard disk works as well, but is usually slower to carry out compared to using the nano image. :)

Cheers,
Franco

well im using windows 10 to try and write the disk so the dd utility is out since it is only Linux and Mac OS.
I do have Rufus 3.4 that does the same thing i think.
I can try Rufus out and i do have a Live USB stick i can try and run it from that on my computer.

Well i got it to work this weekend.
I hooked the hard drive for the router to me extrnal drive enclosure.
Plugged it into my laptop.
Ran Rufus installed the Nano image.
Reinstalled the drive into the computer.
