Title: Dual SSID on Atheros 6280
Post by: maxxer on November 13, 2018, 03:20:03 pm
Hi

I've done some searches but couldn't figure out definitely: is it possible to have a dual SSID for an Atheros 6280 card? We've bought a Celeron N2930 (https://www.miniserver.it/firewall/compact-asutm-wifi-gsm/compact-small-utm-wifi-pfsense-opnsense-hardware.html) based board with the above chipset, which if I got it right should support dual SSID. We would like to have a 2.4 and a 5GHz network.

From what I understand pfSense doesn't support this feature but OPNsense should. I've tried configuring wifi on the latter (latest version downloaded yesterday) but when creating the second WIFI interface it returns error, saying it's probably not supported by the driver or the chipset.

Is this expected to work?
thanks

Hi,
i've some expirience with Atheros 9280 cards and OPNsense.
With an Atheros 9280 based card dual SSID works.
But all SSID works into the same wlan-mode. So you have an 2.4 or 5 Ghz wlan with dual SSID. Dual SSID with one 2.4 and one 5 Ghz SSID won't work!
Therefore I'd used 2 Atheros 9280 cards for wlan with 2.4 and 5 Ghz into my hw. But the wlan stability/quality of this solution was very bad, so that i use an external wifi ap meanwhile.
I suggest everyone to use an external ap for wifi with the *sense!

best regards
