Hi all,
just would like to help if someone is struggling with stability issues with Protectli FW4B, coreboot and the latest OPNsense version. This combo seems to be causing intermittent kernel panics and crashes.
I have Protectli FW4B from 2022 and was using pfSense until now.
When migrating to OPNSense I decided to drop AMIBIOS and flash to coreboot (for improved security). The AMIBIOS was the original from somewhere around 2021 or so.
The flash succeeded and I was able to migrate to OPNSense.
The intermittent crashes started more or less instantly about 1 day interval and continued every 1 to 3 days.
Tried all possible tweaks I could find e.g. intel microcode etc. but nothing helped.
As a more or less last resort I decided to flash back to AMIBIOS (latest version) and like a magic the system has been stable since then (16 days up and running now).
I have reported this issue to Protectli's github. They have not acknowledged it yet.
Apologies to OPNSense devs, I also reported these crashes to you via crash report tool before figuring out the real reason (=coreboot) behind the crashes.
I couldn't find any similar post from the forum so hope this helps someone out there.
Br,
jsep
I can remember reading something similar not too long ago, but I am not sure if it was the same Protectli model or not...
Unfortunately, your experience is not unique...
