Title: help with unbound reporting
Post by: starfox101 on April 22, 2026, 11:00:51 AM
Using unbound reporting I have, Top passed domains: MSN.Com 52%. What gives? I have nothing windows, Microsoft. Couple months back I used a win laptop because I had major hardware failure. Lost two network card's and a switch. Both network card's or in linux computers. I replaced two switch's both were the same age. Added unifi 24 poe. Everything is back up, but can't figure the msn thing.

Thanks

And the Unbound reports (Details tab) reveal nothing about which host is making those requests for msn.com?

This is why I like Pi-Hole : Just 1 Click and you know who the naughty client is making those queries :)

Thanks for the reply's, Maybe the Top passed domains Has much longer history! I can use unbound to search, Just can't find anything. I did use the laptop for a couple of weeks. Was trying out Technitium DNS Server. Waiting on the hardware.

Yeah, that's the only gotcha.  I think the detailed reports are limited.

I don't want to give this one to @nero (:P) but it's true... Pi-Hole wins for log duration.

LOL! ^_^

Use whatever you want just make sure it's something better than messing around with Unbound who IMHO should not be bothered with this stuff and should be just talking to the Root DNS Servers for you ;)

I do have to say that running Mono because of .NET software on Linux/*BSD is just silly and should be avoided, but hey... whatever floats your boat!

What uses .NET?  Unbound is written in C, no?

EDIT: nevermind, I got your point.  You're just drawing an analogy.

Not in this thread, but we should try to take some measurements.  Who knows, maybe my single DoT request with DNSBL filtering in OPNsense could in some cases beat your recursive requests to multiple authoritative servers even with your optimized filtering engine?  It's possible.

I was talking about this :

It would never be my choice unless I am running some sort of Windows based Server but even there .NET can be a mess sometimes...
