Title: Changing WAN from DHCP to static causes internet to drop
Post by: MrLee on March 19, 2026, 03:49:13 PM
I'm running opnSense 26.1.4
I have an internet router that can server DHCP, but would prefer to use a static address so I don't need to worry about the address changing.

when I have the wan connection set to DHCP, the internet works perfectly on the LAN side. ping is good, etc.

when I switch the WAN from DHCP to static with the exact same address the DHCP gave, the internet drops for the LAN.
yes, I have added the default gateway.

If I go to the console of the opnsense router and do "7) ping host" it works fine to any internet address.
it's just the LAN that has lost internet access.

if anyone can help, please and thank you.

I realized the issue.
I forgot to enable "IPv4 gateway rules to point to my gateway.

all good now.
