Title: will 26.7 include the if_pppoe kernel module?
Post by: nd2420 on March 16, 2026, 03:01:25 PM
i am unsure if the "if_pppoe" kernel module is something made available in the freebsd 15 release, or if it something that the pfsense/netgate team created just for themselves and have not made it available otherwise?

Nope, legend has it it was not added to FreeBSD so nobody can "steal" it. It's funny for a kernel module that is built on code from OpenBSD.

The more interesting theory, however, is that in practice it's not something that FreeBSD itself would consider useful or effective.

I guess we'll never know?

Cheers,

Apart from the hype, what is it good for (https://sheridancomputers.com/blog/view/videos/testing-pfsense-plus-new-pppoe-driver-if_pppoe-vs-mpd)? I mean, apart from > 1 Gbps connections...
