Title: Creating a custom WAN interface
Post by: Diggy on February 24, 2026, 07:56:55 PM

When I initially setup my OPNsense router, I did not setup the WAN interface.  As such, now when I click on WAN, it has no settings and shows the Assignment page instead.  I'm fine with that as I would like to create my own custom WAN/NAT interface anyways.

But, how do I do that?  At the moment, I have an interface named WAN_rtr1_Cox_01.  It is basically setup as a (LAGG) LAN interface at the moment.  How do I make it to be a WAN/NAT interface, preferably subject to automatic rules, etc.???  The documentation doesn't seem to provide much guidance on this matter.  It will have a static ip4 and dynamic ip6 address.

First off, turn off DHCP on it. Select it under the Interfaces menu and give it the IPv4/v6 settings it needs. Then under settings/gateways add it as a gateway.

Edit: I should mention you can rename it too.
