Title: Intel i226 2.5 GbE NIC on OPNsense – international upload slow
Post by: Abdellah on December 18, 2025, 07:22:56 PM
Setup:
Versions:
OPNsense 25.7.9_7-amd64
FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE-p5
OpenSSL 3.0.18

Router specs:
CPU:AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor (6 cores, 12 threads)
RAM:16 Gb
Storage: SSD 240 Gb
Motherboard: Asus PRIME B450M-K II
NIC: Fenvi 2500Mbps PCI-E To RJ45 Network Card I226 Chip 2.5G 100/1000/2500Mbps Gigabit Ethernet Four Ports

Plan:
Fiber from Algeria Telecom: 1.5 Gbps down / 450 Mbps up

Issue:
When any PC is connected to my OPNsense 2.5 GbE NIC, international uploads are slow. If I force the NIC to 1 Gbps in the PC's Device Manager(my gaming pc), upload speed returns to normal (~450 Mbps), while local uploads are always fine.

Thanks — waiting for your help.

Does Ookla report packet loss? That could cause a dip in performance. Cloudflare (https://speed.cloudflare.com/) reports it, but their anycast model might make a non-local test difficult. (Or not... I don't care to look at it, as it starts the test immediately.)

Testmy.net (latency) (https://testmy.net/latency) might be interesting, but not relevant.
