I have been using OPNSense for a couple of years now and suddenly I cannot upgrade to 25.1. The install gets stuck at "loading device manager", This happens when installing from a USB or CD. I'm currently using version 24.7 which I can install just fine via USB, I've reinstalled 24.7 several times in just to make sure it's not me. The 25.1 install does work on my laptop.
Hardware (Sorry, it's the slowest\smallest PC I have)
HP Z4 G4 i9-10980XE
128GB RAM
Intel X520-DA NIC
I have tried to install 25.1 on another Z4 with similar specs and the same result, it gets stuck at "loading device manager" so I believe it's something with the Z4 hardware, just can't figure out what it is.
Any ideas?
Figured it out. I have 4 PCIe slots 2 16x and 2 8x. I started putting the NIC and video card in different slots to see if that was it and I got it. The Video card has to be in Slot 1 which is 16x and the NIC in slot 2 which is 8x, if I use the other 16x and 8x it will not work. I also had to remove the SPF modules from the NIC while OPNSense booted. Even crazier is once it successfully boots I can leave the SPF modules in during subsequent reboots. I don't get it but hey, I hope this helps someone in the future.
I don't know if it's just an experiment, but that machine looks overkill.
If you were getting yourself a mini-PC, you might recoup the cost in energy savings pretty quickly...
