Title: Lost in the OPNsense wilderness
Post by: Winterlight on May 08, 2025, 12:59:34 AM
I have just installed the latest version of OPNsense on a five port nameless device. See pictures and I am attempting to build a transparent filter as presented on Dave's garage. I am getting confused because some of the explanations on line are for router replacement. But I just want the transparent filter.
So I am planning on putting this transparent filter between my router and my network switches. That is were it should go...correct?

I downloaded the latest 25.1 version of OPNsense and installed it. Now I suppose to go to the GUI. Am I suppose to access the GUI from the computer I installed OPNsense on.  Or am I suppose to use another computer that is connected by a laptop NIC and the OPNSense Lan port.

I have tried both using the  IP address 192.168.1.24 and neither is working but I am not sure of the five network ports what is my lan port. Any attempt I make to log in the GUI fails.
Clarification on any of this is appreciated

Yes. It's the preferred location.

Screen and keyboard on the physical machine give you console access.
Once setup, it's typically more practical to access the console via ssh. Physical access helps for recovery though.

You're supposed to access the Web GUI at https://192.168.1.1 (not 24).
A network cable in the port you assigned to LAN can be connected to a PC.
Note that these no name PCs have a tendency to not map igcN to ETH_N consistently...
IOW, igc0 might not be mapped to ETH0. Check the LED for connectivity. Then check your PC is getting an IP within 192.168.1.0/24.
Then you should be able to access the GUI.

Be careful: That is not a "a five port nameless device"! The COM port is a serial console, not a network port.

You should be aware that that video has serious flaws and will lead to an unreachable appliance.

In my opinion the setup as transparent filtering bridge should also only be used in very specific circumstances and is not recommended.

This video is the primary reason I got on board the OPNsense train.
I don't remember having issues setting up the bridge (on proxmox, I don't remember if the video uses a virtualized instance).
This said, after I watched it, I setup using a guide in the description (on Zenarmor's site?)...
I experimented for a few weeks in bridge mode (0 risk) before I reconfigured to replace my old router. I actually moved VLANs incrementally.
