Title: Performance Issues with OPNsense on Core Duo Processors
Post by: MakaHomes on January 04, 2025, 06:44:03 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm currently running OPNsense on a system with an Intel Core Duo processor, and I'm experiencing performance issues. The setup includes basic firewall and routing functions, but the system struggles under heavy traffic and load.

Has anyone else run OPNsense on a Core Duo processor? I'm looking for advice on optimizing performance or determining if an upgrade is necessary. Specifically, I'd like to know:

Recommended settings and configurations for better performance

Any known limitations with Core Duo processors (https://serverorbit.com/cpus-and-processors/core-duo)

Suggestions for potential hardware upgrades

Thanks in advance for your help!

Heh. Your link opens (for me) a page for the Xeon W9-3575X, which shouldn't have significant performance problems.

A Core Duo, on the other hand, i.e. Yonah, the 32-bit predecessor to the Core 2... that could be a bit slow. Older systems like that could have quite a few performance issues, from chipset-based memory control to (what would now be considered) slow I/O (network, storrage, video). Depending on how fast you want to spend (time vs. money, where time is money), you could troubleshoot your current setup or punt and use something newer/faster.

I am running mine on the very 1st Atom 230 and seeing no performance issues. It is on DSL so this may explain why it copes. If you are on fiber/cable/LAN it may be a different story for you.
