I like it too, but I got flashbanged.
I had the old forum still opened refreshed it and got blinded for a moment from the shock.

Anyway, dark mode please? :)

S.

The dark mode for the GUI is planned in 25.1 (and can already be previewed in the development version).

Someone already asked for a docs dark mode.  We will consider but need to get a few more things in order first.

BTW, SMF underneath was updated too.

Thanks,
Franco

Looks like a no by default... https://github.com/live627/smf-karma

Not that attached to karma these days.  Back when we started my only concern was that nobody should be able to downvote others, but that was an easy fix.

I asked Ad to give forum.opnsense.org an IPv6... it looks like it's working? yay finally?

Wuuu GUI dark mode, Awesome many thanks in advance!
Also yes dark mode for docs as well would be awesome. Nothing against the new design of the docs or forum (I like it) but is too flashy for us mole people. I personaly use a FF addon to over come it for now "Dark Reader" it works well but sometimes it looks just weird.

I always thought of karma as a thank you to someone for the good will and efford

And yes IPV6 forum working :)

As always many thanks for all the work you people at OPN do.

S.

I don't share everyone's happiness.
The new design is certainly good, but large controls (buttons) with small font of the main text topics, huge incomprehensible indents and empty spaces - I do not understand it. What's it for?

Yeah, plus the gigantic banner image on the index pages... Maybe everyone else is running 4k monitors nowadays, but I have to scroll to even see the first post in a forum on my antique "1080p" screen, due to all the wasted space at the top of the page....

Agreed - it also doesn't work very well on mobile for these reasons - far too much padding I think. Hopefully things that can be tweaked?

Then I really sympathize with them, it's shallow on 1080p, and on 4k you won't be able to see anything at all).

I felt that mobile (phone) viewing is improved.  I wasn't able to navigate previously without zooming in, but now it's possible.

The post editor also seems to have got a nice facelift, though I can't find the smileys menu and emojis don't seem to be recognized.  I won't speculate on whether that's a bug or a feature ;-)

I'm not thrilled about the dominant gray tones.  I get what you're doing with the contrasting red accents, though, and brand identity.

One bug I noticed: when I went to preview this post, I was warned that 2 new posts had been added but I wasn't able to view those even after hitting 'preview' again from the editor view.  I think that was working before (?)

The new design looks OK, though a bit pale, with too much whitespace or white, space. I have never been a fan of sans-serif fonts for body text but the world is not with me on that. Looking forward to dark mode, hoping for more clarity in a quieter view.

My usual process here is to go to unread topics, pick out those in which I am interested in new tabs, and mark all the rest as Read. However, on clicking the button to do that I am asked in a dialog whether I am sure? Yes. I am. I've been doing it for years and would very much like to continue, thank you. Please get rid of this, or provide the option to avoid it.

Alas, I must say that I am less than impressed by the new layout. I can hardly read it, partly because of the low contrast, partly because of the small font size of 83%. Instead of readable text, many layout elements take up much space, thus nearly half of the page is full before content starts even on my 38" monitor. Thus, scaling up to 120% is no option.

As a temporary fix, I use this with Stylus (a Firefox plugin):

#siteslogan {
    display: none;
    visibility: hidden;
}

.postblock {
    background: #f8f8f8
}

#messageindex, .postblock {
  background: #f8f8f8;
}

.main_container {
  background: #f8f8f8;
}

body {
    font: 90%/150% "Segoe UI","Helvetica Neue","Nimbus Sans L",Arial,"Liberation Sans",sans-serif;
}

#lkHeader_sub {
  background: #fff;
  display: flex;
  flex-direction: row;
  min-height: 30px;
}

#top_section #lkHeader_sub .inner_wrap {
  position: relative;
  padding-bottom: 5px;
  margin-bottom: 5px;
}

.button, .quickbuttons > li > a, .inline_mod_check {
  padding: 4px 5px;
  box-sizing: border-box;
  border-radius: 10px;
}

Sad to say that, but this is the first website I had to resort to something like this just to be able to use it decently.

The font is too small, yes I know I can zoom in, but it used to be easier to read than this one.
I miss the orange too, it was like a greeting page, you're on Opnsense now :-)

Where are the stylesheets? There should definitely been on the original design to include and support external stylesheets as well.

I was a little bit shocked first. Why would anyone in 2024 create a new forum and not use discourse for it?
But the design looks pretty nice and it looks like all the needed features are there.

But the wasted space is really annoying. Take a look at this:
Bildschirmfoto 2024-12-13 um 07.13.49.jpg
This is my whole screen taken up by mostly three lines of text :)

Also, 256KB limit for file attachments seams a little bit silly.
And heic pictures are allowed to upload, stuck forever at 50% during the upload and then are unsupported..

I never like design-changes, but it looks good so far.
Yeah, the banner is waaaays too big... the most annoying to me is, espacially in "unread posts", that 'Started by [USERNAME] in [FORUMNAME] has the same size as topic-header what makes it really confusing...
The second line should be in a different color and/or smaller size... or topic header in bold (but not the OP in bold).

Runde Avatare sind doof. Wenn man nicht eingeloggt ist gibt's keinen "Reply" button, mit dem man schnell einloggt und direkt antworten kann? Dämliche ajax.googleapis.com sind bei mir standardmäßig geblockt... :-p

Agree on all points, I was in the middle of using Stylus as well for the first time to fix the stylesheet issues.  Unfortunately there are some issues that require the template to be fixed, such as why unread/updated topics is out there with it's own bar and not part of another navigation bar.  But the excessive padding & margins and massive logos/headers are the biggest problem, on my laptop I had to scroll down a full page just to see the first post.

a day later as i am sipping coffee and doing my daily reads.   i would have to agree, the document in red squares and the hand on the right side of the image, works good on the home page.   but doesn't need to be on every page so i have to scroll down.  i am working directly from a laptop i don't have external screens even..

i would add a picture of the image,   but i can't upload it directly to the site.   i don't have an image hosting website and don't want to create a free account for that

Why do people always struggle to add images? That was the case with the old forum layout, too. I just don't get it - the instructions are clearly written on the "Post reply" form - see attached image ;)

Kind regards,

Ah ... now I notice. I rarely scroll down that far but hit the "reply" button instead. Or even more frequently "quote".

And now with the new layout "quote" uses "quick reply" so no attachment option, either. That wasn't the case with the old layout. Definitely a regression.

@franco Please look into offering the "attachments" option on all posting forms.

A formatting issue in this post: https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=44435.msg222631#msg222631

The text runs off the the edge.  It's more pronounced when using a different font (such as @meyergru's custom styling in my screenshot), but the issue is there in the default styling too.

Not sure:

Recent change to my lab, trying to reduce power/heat/noise with a lower power NAS. More details here: https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/mini-truenas-server-build.46107/

That said, dragging the image didn't work so well, but might have been me. Clicking the "Click or Drag files here" towards the bottom of the reply window works.

If you use the quick reply, this option is not present. If you preview the post then it returns with the full reply page.

That may be what the other poster meant, but it's not what I meant. There used to be a "Last Post" button/link for each discussion/thread, that would take you directly there. That said; it just dawned on me that you can (now?) click on the timestamp in the "Last Post" column.

first of all: Thanks for a fresh look :)

I know how much work this is.

Just a few personal notes for desktop view, some already repeated:

- Readability is not great. Body (article) Text sizing indeed needs improvement.
- Is it really a good idea to have body (article) text on a grey background? Despite the size, that degrades readability.
- The type face runs pretty wide by nature. That also does not improve readability.

All that being said, in my personal opinion the official OPNsense documentation - which uses the same type face - is much more readable.

Just my 2 cents :)

From the other thread I made -

It looks nice, but it's unreadable.

Would it be possible to at least make the topic headings more distinct?
The normal forum topic list is sort of ok, but the "Unread Posts" view is really bad.

For my taste the banner is way too large and there's too much padding. Furthermore, I'd wish the pinned threads had a different background colour.

Oh and I prefer sites that don't pull in half of the internet via scripting, like google, fontawsome and all that ...

the thread titels are truncated and unreadable. I hardly visit the forum anymore (some will appreciate), it's unusable and no good user experience overall...
