Title: Ad blocker
Post by: robertkwild on July 30, 2024, 11:03:46 AM
Hi all,

Looking for an ad blocker for opnsense that can by default block adds specially for YouTube

Is there a native one on there by default or do I need to download a package, rather choose to not pay for it but if any good i will

Thanks,
Rob

Nope. No native ad blockers on firewalls, including OPN.
There are addtional plugins from community to extend functionality to ad blockers i.e. AdGuardHome but even that one is not able to. That is because the ads first were being hosted in the same domain but also now they are injected into the video stream. Something I read recently, a new addition to their arsenal to prevent circumvention.

this is the one I saw, was still easy to find, was on a phone : https://www.androidpolice.com/weekly-android-news-roundup-july-27-2024/
On OPN you can install AdGuard and you could also use a pihole on your network but as I say, the ads from the same domain can't be blocked as they share the domain with the content.
You're going to have to stay with those web browser plugins. They can't be used on the firewall. There is no equivalent that I know of.

so theres no way of stopping youtube ads via opnsense as you say all opnsense plugins/native plugins block DNS and that wouldnt work for youtube as now ads are on same DNS

Correct.

Possibly Zenarmor can do it, but I don't know for sure.

I don't know. There's an entire Zenarmor subforum on this platform. Best open a new thread about your licensing questions there.

The way Youtube does ads, Zenarmor will not block them. AdBlock browser extension mostly works, it's a constant fight back and forth between blockers and google.

Zenarmor will block most other google ads and telemetry, at least the free version does. Paid might offer more.

so basically opnsense cant do it, only real option are web browser plugins as they decrypt the traffic once it lands on your web browser?
