I have an extra PowerEdge R740 that I want to run OPNsense.
I purchased an Intel 82599es Dual SFP NIC.
The PowerEdge does not recognize the card
I downloaded the drivers from the Intel site
I put the tar ball on a USB drive and went into the OPNsense shell to try to install it and I can not get it to work for the life of me.
Any advice? I'll try anything at this point.
Try adding the tunable
if_ixgbe_load="YES"
to "System: Settings: Tunables" in the GUI or in the shell via "/boot/loader.conf.local".
You might also need to add
hw.ix.unsupported_sfp=1

Thank you. I booted up Windows Server to see if the exe drivers would work, and had no luck. I took a deeper look and didn't find any examples of this being compatible with a R740.
The good news is someone pointed out to me an obvious, cheaper solution - return the NIC and purchase a Dell SFP Daughterboard SFP NIC. The 4 port SFP NICs are a third of the price, and the Dual Port 75GBe NICs are the same price. 🤦🏽
