Title: How many CPU to allocate in proxmox?
Post by: pindaroli on June 09, 2024, 03:47:54 PM
I am waiting for n305 based applaince. I will install 32gb and proxmox on top.
How many cpu/memory to allocate for fluid 2.5gbx4 routing is needed?
Do you suggest use of CPU balloning?

Thanks
Olindo

I suggest running it on bare metal, but I would give it at least 4 cpu.

for a test I would set the cpu to "host" and yes I would also start with 4 cvpu.
I've been using 2 cores, 2 threads with cpu as "host" on a commodity amd cpu with 2 interfaces. CPU only spikes due to Zenarmor but without it enabled, it barely goes above Load average    0.36, 0.26, 0.30.
CPU is AMD Ryzen 5 5600U with Radeon Graphics.

I changed my project....now i have N100 (4 cpu mono-thread) hosted on proxmox.
I am using 3 cpu and 8gb and seems ok.

I used to give it 4 which was well oversized.

Afaik most processes in OPNsense are executed only on a single core anyway only so even only 1 could be sufficient.

Make sure to assign it enough RAM for what you intend to do with it.
