I commented on the other thread about a Discord channel for us, figured it would be best to make a new post about this, (Mods, feel free to delete if this is excessive, I hope not, but I get it if so. :))

This is UNOFFICIAL, so do not expect official support, or help etc as we have no mods/devs in the discord afaik.
More advanced questions and solutions are still best posted in here, the forums.
Rules mirror the reddit/forums as well.
This is more focused on building a community in discord, and maybe doing some small troubleshooting along the way.
Feel free to join! Got a few people trickling in as we speak.

What about Telegram, Threema, Signal, Whatsapp, etc... Let's create 10 more seperate chat communities to keep track of. Yay.
I sincerely hope the OPNsense team decline the "invitation" to split the community.
If smaller groups wish to have private chats they are welcome, not at the expense of the enterprise.
Yea fine for chats but less useful for technical discussions since those are not crawlable by search engine robots.
Let just stick with forum & reddit.
What abou Slack??? IMHO forum, IRC and reddit is enough.
There are around 100 regulars answering qualified content, if you split more and more, quality will suffer.

As far as separation of data. I do not believe that we are doing damage by adding in a channel that many people have been asking for. Besides, many people in here are using it for really quick troubleshooting. As opposed to waiting a few days on forums or on reddit, people are getting seemingly immediate answers, which serves the grow the community actually.
The Separation of mediums being detrimental I can see the thought process there, however that's not really how things tend to work in actuality. Especially coming from a few members (albeit very skilled members) that don't even use it. You guys sound like people that make comments like "Oh you cant even see above 1080p. 30fps is all the eye can catch anyway" from back in the day, now where are we? Much different scenario in reality than theory.
However, We do link and track reddit in the discord so people can get notified when a reddit post goes up and I have seen people using this to see and assist in the reddit to get people answers quicker when something comes up. Hopefully you guys don't see assisting the community in a faster manner as damaging.
We're looking at methods to do the same here with these forums.
Now, it doesn't let people go comment in the discord on them, but it does link right to the reddit thread or forum thread so they can easily click the link and see it in its origination. Which, means faster response times for the community. More people getting help, more adoption, etc. C'mon, this isn't PFSense. have an OPN mind. ;)
Either way, We have roles setup for the forums mods, OPNSense Staff, and Reddit mods if you guys all like.
Communication is key in any open source project, I notice nobody in here said a single thing about the massive OPNSense Facebook groups that dwarf this forum as well. but im sure somewhere along the way someone said it was a dumb idea. if you don't like it, then don't join. Its not everyone's cup of tea and that's ok. But for those of us who like discord for is ease of use and flexibility. We can use it. :)
Either way our team will continue to grow, build, and increase the efficacy of the discord to assist the community as a whole. :) Thank you to everyone whos already joined and those jumping in to assist, troubleshoot, help people out and increase adoption of OPNSense which we all enjoy. :)
For me, its not about rules and roles. My time is limited and I only hop in the forums when travelling. Helping this way wont work with discord. I like your commitment and keep fingers crossed that it works out in the long run, but dont be mad at me when I'm only here/irc/reddit :)

This is actually a solid point, however we integrated "Answer Overflow" which makes our discord messages crawlable by google bots.

100% understand that. No pressure at all! Just trying to serve the community as best as I can. I get being busy, I understand having to manage time and where you invest that time. no hard feelings whatsoever. :)
