Title: Starting web GUI failed / Admin user nologin shell / Root disabled / Locked out
Post by: rollspulpfiction on January 27, 2024, 08:26:10 AM
I'm locked out of my router and before I do a full reinstall of OPNSense on a Protectli FW4C I wanted to check if there's no other option available to fix the issue.

A new admin user was setup and root was disabled. However, I didn't realize the nologin shell was selected for the new user and can't ssh (or VGA) into the router.

The web gui was bound to the LAN interface and was reachable until I rebooted the router and now I'm seeing a "Starting web GUI... failed" message on boot.

Bottom line, the web gui is unreachable and I can't use console login as root is disabled and the admin user is disconnected upon login. Do I have any option other than starting all over?

Thank you for the assistance!

In single user mode I attempted to reset webgui following these instructions:
https://docs.opnsense.org/troubleshooting/webgui.html
but received an error message that configd is not reachable.

I also attempted to reset the root password following these instructions:
https://docs.opnsense.org/troubleshooting/password_reset.html
but I get the fatal error in the attached picture and it doesn't work.

Any option to fix this error? Anything else I should try?
