Title: Do TP-LINK Routers support OPNSense?
Post by: ANormalDumbass on January 23, 2024, 07:21:36 AM
Hey guys, recently i found this proyect and decided to do it on my own, i don't have access to an old PC of sorts, but i do have a TP-LINK Router. Is there a list of compatible Routers out there? Couldn't find one myself.

In specific, i want to know if the router "AC1200 Wireless MU-MIMO Gigabit Router" is compatible with this proyect.

Best regards,
just another user.

Definitely not as a platform to run OPNsense on. You need a computer with an Intel or AMD processor.

That doesn't have to be expensive or noisy. Search Youtube for '1l pc'

Running OPNsense on after market off the self routers like TPlink,Asus etc. is not possible.

First of all the CPU and NICs they are using are unsupported.
Second even if supported, its still a terrible idea as for the fact such devices dont have enough CPu and Memory headroom to run properly a full scale FW like OPNsense.

If you want to run a Custom OS on a such routers then the correct choice is OpenWRT if they do support it.

For OPN you need a PC, best would be a small factor one as mentioned by @bartjsmit
