Title: Squid 6.6
Post by: vost on January 03, 2024, 01:44:23 PM
Hello,

Squid 6.6 has been released
https://www.squid-cache.org/squid/software/squid-6.6-RELEASENOTES.html

Will it be updated in OPNSense 24.1?

I'd expect Squid to be a plugin in 24.1

23.7.11 is scheduled for release today and it still has 6.5 so 6.6 in 24.1 is likely indeed.

As problematic as update to 6.4 went through I'd say "good news" remains to be seen :)

I understand and greatly appreciate your efforts and that of the OPNsense team
Lately, I've been using WEB Proxy and I was quite surprised by the level of care you took.
I wish OPNSense would stick with Squid. Unlike the debate I'm seeing in PFSense, and of course on all sides there are some more right and some less, but in the end, being able to have the proxy I think it still stands out simply because it's useful for many.

Michael

Hi Michael,

Although from 24.1 onwards Squid will be a plugin not much will change with the current way of handling the software. I've previously said as long as Squid will continue releasing we don't have to consider removing it completely.

And as long as people report production issues with e.g. Squid updates we will be able to address them in a timely manner or at least provide a workaround (like opnsense-revert).

Cheers,
Franco

Hi Franco,

I understand. If I could send a message to the Squid team, I would recommend that they follow the same Zenarmor pattern and work with different versions of the product, to have a community edition and a commercial edition. Or maybe in the future we can have Zenarmor ProxyNG correct? It wouldn't be a bad idea...

Michael
