Title: New OPNsense Firewall
Post by: spetrillo on September 27, 2023, 07:35:46 PM
Hello all,

I am considering the MinisForum NPB7 as my next firewall. It comes with a 13th Gen i7, with 6 PCores and 8 ECores. Will OPNsense make use of the ECores or should I stick to a 13th Gen i5?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve, I think support is still patchy https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/freebsd-ule-scheduler-on-e-cores.88297/

I also like mostly boring hardware for security devices  8)

Yes I like boring kit also but I see that Ecores are going to be an interesting capability.

I will move back to the i5.

Last I checked all packets run the same speed... not sure if I'd place any so called ecore chips on my device as I see no point to slowing down or attempting to save a nano watt of power.

Unless you are planning on running a packet a week, I recommend US Postal Service or PTT for that, no need to waste any power.  ;D
