Hey guys, maybe you can help me out:
It was the second time that my scope7 with opnsense 23.1 stopped working properly.
At first, there was no more access to the web ui, but i could ping it.
I tried a first reboot, but the opnsense stuck in the booting mode. I connected my pc via the console port and putty, nothing showed in the terminal. I tried many more reboots, but the only solution was to completely unplug it, wait 10 minutes and then restart it again. Now the i saw the booting in putty and everything works fine.
What could be the problem? I tried to read and identify something in the logs, but even in debug mode there were no error messages that would match this problem.
It happend every two weeks.
This sounds like a hardware issue. Try a memory test and making sure the unit stays cool. https://www.memtest86.com/
I would also back up the config, format the disk and re-install. Modern filesystems don't take kindly to repeated hard stops.

Hi Bart,
thanks for your reply. Since I didn't know memtest86, do I boot the stick and plug it right away in the scope or somewhere in the network?
Thanks for your help. :)
Without getting all fancy with PXE boot or suchlike, creating a USB stick and booting from it is the easiest way. You normally press a special key (i.e. Delete, Function key, etc) just after power on to get the boot menu
Note that a few boot disks already have a memory test option, notably Ubuntu.
