Title: Anyone used TP-link eap670 access point with opnsense?
Post by: rama3124 on February 01, 2023, 08:18:14 AM
I was looking to buy the tp-link eap670 as an access point for my home. Will I need a seperate controller? Any issues using this AP with opnsense?

Thanks in advance

Don't buy EAP650/653 or 670 from TP Link.

They do all have IPv6 issues and TCP issues while using VLANs!

TP Link is working on a fix since months. Take other APs from them but not the named ones above.
You can find a lot of comments within their community forums.

There is a beta - but the issues are still existing. I wouldn't wait for a solution as they're trying a long long time.

You don't need an controller.
TP Link EAPs do have direct web-gui access (no need for an controller - only when you're having a big network and want to 'manage' stuff).
But the web-gui is capable of managing different VLAN SSIDs and so on.

Wish I read this before I picked an eap670 up on the way home today!
Are there any issues if I don't wish to use IPv6? Also this is probably a stupid question but can I place different ssids on different VLANs and preserve these tags thru a smart switch? I've always thought that smart switches only allowed one tag per port

I have an EAP670 that wouldn't pickup IPV6 addresses for a few minutes. Also had some issues SSHing to various devices on that wifi. It seems to of been identifed as a hardware offloading issues or something along those lines.

There is a beta firmware that fixes the issues I'm aware of. Here's the link if anyone is interested:
https://static.tp-link.com/upload/beta/2022/202212/20221220/EAP670_v1_1.0.0_20221219(beta).zip

Note: The controller will tell you an update is available after you install it. Just ignore it. And always backup first.

Here's the relevant TP Link forum thread too. It calls out EAP650, but applies to a number of newer models, including the EAP670.

I have an EAP670 and use the direct web access.  it's my only tplink product so I don't use the controller

I haven't had any ipv6 problems, but I may not even have ipv6 enabled.

I was going to suggest that you simply drop V6 addresses if you run into a problem with the TP Link device.  V6 for home use really isn't necessary at this point.

Yes you can place different SSIDs on different VLANs.  As you hinted at, you'll need to make sure the network port that the wireless AP is plugged into is tagged for the necessary VLANs.  I run 5 different SSIDs at home (Main, Guest, PBX Phones, IOT with Internet, IOT without internet) - all assigned to different VLANs. .
