Title: Managed Switch recommendations
Post by: Spiky_Gladiator on January 08, 2023, 06:25:15 PM
Hi,

I'm looking for a business grade, good quality managed switch that is very easy to configure via a web interface without any need for additional cloud controllers, is widely used and comes with a good amount of documentation as well as many tutorials on YouTube. What I'm mostly looking for is security in mind so that VLAN Hopping or overloading the switch with packets to turn a switch into a standard hub is not possible among other protections.

I don't need anything bigger than 8 ports, maximum 10 and be quiet if possible.
My budget for this switch is no more than £200.

Any recommendations ?

Cisco 1000 series, possibly refurbished.

This seems like a good choice, I wanted to check out how much a new one costs on their website but apparently you can't buy it from Cisco itself  ??? There's nothing on their website that would indicate that, very confusing model and the website itself.

I tried to find another managed switch but all I get on Google are the cheap £20 - £30 switches which obviously I don't want. I only managed to find a company called FS, are they legit or have anyone heard of them before ?

There are other products by Cisco, but these ones run classic IOS and are in some sense as "enterprise" as one can afford for a home lab/network. Also you can ditch the web UI (it's a bit "meh", but does work) and go straight for Ansible, which has good support for IOS.

Unifi, Mikrotik and the like all seem to depend on a dedicated management system and to make matters worse continuously nudge (short of downright force) you to put that in their "cloud".

So for me Cisco it is just like the last 25 years in ISP and enterprise environments.

If you are looking into refurbished, the Catalyst 2960-L series has properties almost identical to the 1000s.
