Title: DEC695 OPNSense Hardware settings?
Post by: koala_decoy on October 22, 2022, 09:44:02 PM
Hello All - Picked up a DEC695 to replace my old APU2 that had PFSense on it.

As I do with everything I can I wiped the disk and did a clean install of lastest OPNSense. One thing I did not think of was logging in first to see any factory hardware settings I should set such as vlan hardware offload or hardware encryption etc.

Wondering if anyone (maybe someone from Deciso B.V.) knows what these should be without my having to dig in myself to figure them all out.  ;D

For routing it makes the most sense to disable all hardware offloading, in part because this can't be used while forwarding traffic and in part because FreeBSD support still varies greatly and is sometimes broken for drivers.

But this is also the default. One thing to note is that "VLAN Hardware Filtering" should be at "leave default" for other buggy reasons in the OS...

Cheers,
Franco

PS: The Deciso devices come preinstalled with the latest (business) release and adjusted defaults. Not sure why you wiped it, but you might have lost some other settings vs. installer defaults. We were discussing publishing the default configurations for each device, but haven't decided on a format yet (GitHub, Documentation page, Download section).

I for one run the community edition on all my Deciso appliances. One reason to reinstall.

Fair enough, but just for the record: side-grade to the community version is possible from the GUI at any point in time.

Sorry, false information. It's already online: https://docs.opnsense.org/hardware/defaults.html
